Anybody else have this compulsion to just spend money on items that you didn't enter the shop for?
Case in point: I went to Wilkos the other day (glamorous, I know), for some washing powders etc. and, of course, got distracted by the cosmetics aisles. I didn't even know Wilko's stocked makeup. And there was a Rimmel counter...
I know that Rimmel are a cheap, reliable drugstore brand: but I did a double take as there was a sign that read "Everything under £5!" above the counter. I mean, when you've become accustomed to paying £20, £30+ on single cosmetic products, that's an amazing read!

Wake Me Up foundation, RRP: £8.99 So because I'm a savvy buyer - or, because I just stumbled upon this Rimmel haven by pure chance - I paid £4.98 for a bottle from Wilkos. I was eager to try this foundation over any of the others that were available to buy, for no reason in particular... but yeah, looking awake is always good! I picked up the lightest shade (Light Porcelain) and this was still a little too dark for me, but was usable. It was quite a thin consistency, so I ended up putting more than I would usually put on for medium - full coverage. As I have normal - dry skin, I've been trying to lay off using powder (which I'm hating) and this foundation was a little on the shiny side for my liking. When I applied YSL's Blur Perfector afterwards, the coverage started to look a little broken around the dry areas on my face. Because I'm going sans-powder to matte-ify my face, this was one of those foundations where my face felt uncomfortably sticky after application, and it took what felt like years to set properly. Half an hour later I used my phone and got makeup all over it because my face was the opposite to the matte look that I prefer. OH and my mascara later smudged under my eyes and I'm thinking it's because my face felt a bit, uh, wet? But there are some good qualities to this foundation. I guess the shiny-esque look does make your skin look healthier and more 'awake', which kinda just comes with any non-matte based |
products. Considering there aren't as many shades available as other brands, Ivory did serve well; just not as well as I'd hoped. My skin felt good at the end of the day when I took my makeup off. But the no brainer here is obviously the price. If you're on a budget, or are saving your top foundations for special occasions etc., the Wake Me Up foundation is a good option for daytime wear. I probably would use powder if I were to apply this foundation again... but I'm on a powder-ban at the moment, so WMU is probably going to fester at the bottom of my make up drawer-thing for a while.
Lasting Finish 25h foundation, RRP: £7.99 SPOILER ALERT: this is my least favourite out of the two. But, again, I paid just £4.98 for this bottle. Does anyone else think that the 25 hour advertisement is a bit random? Just leave it at 24, Christ... One thing that I preferred about this foundation is that it is naturally more matte-ifying than the WMU foundation. Similarly, it does leave a slightly sticky finish that doesn't feel great but at least I wasn't gleaming off every light source like some sort of disco ball. And here come the howevers... The matte finish is much more stubborn on the skin when it comes to blending; I experimented with both my Real Techniques Buffing Brush and my fingers when applying to my face but it was pretty reluctant to blend, which resulted in me |
using lots and having a cake face. The foundation claims to be sweat proof for those 25hrs, which is unsurprising when your pores are that clogged up!
The worst thing about the Lasting Finish foundation was the shading. I bought Ivory, the palest shade offered, and it made me look like I'd had some sort of chocolate facial going on. It was waaaay too dark for little old me, so I'm probably going to have to palm it off onto one of my friends to try to offer a fair review. It was that dark that I even applied some to my cheeks with another foundation to attempt to contour my face slightly, but that didn't really work out either.

For one of my first reviews, this certainly was a whiny one! I promise I'm not always Miss Pessimistic. And I really do have faith in Rimmel in some of their other products, like their eyeliners and polishes etc.. I especially love the fact that they use SPFs in their products! Neither of these foundations really hit it out of the park for me with what I wanted them to achieve, though. I'll be saving WMU for another attempt, maybe.
Have you used these foundations? Have I got it completely wrong or have you had similar issues?
I'd love to hear your thoughts on Rimmel!
